‘Little School’ owner expanded business, family in past 17 years

Carolyn Hoskins has owned and operated The Little School in Fair Grove for 17 years and has had the opportunity to grow her family along the way.
“Basically I got into this because I had three kids and I wanted to be with my kids,” said Hoskins. “It’s been 17 years now, and they have grown and worked here, too.”
In those 17 years The Little School has grown and so has Hoskins’ family. The school saw an expansion in 2000 and again in 2003. Hoskins adopted three children, growing her family of five to family of eight.
The school has room to accommodate 200 children and is currently licensed for up to 88 children. Hoskins estimates her staff educates and cares for 40 children during the morning and 70 in the evening.
“That’s not all at the same time of course,” said Hoskins. “we have plenty of room to take on more children, and we have a staff of 15 people to help educate and care for them.”
The Little School is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Hoskins confirmed there are requirements, such as immunizations, to enroll children. Children enrolled at the school will receive education, social interaction and play time.
The Little School is a Missouri Eat Smart Advanced school. Hoskins explained the school serves whole grains three days a week and serves fresh fruit, rather than canned fruit, among the many other requirements in the Eat Smart Advanced plan.
“Of course that means no sugar for birthdays and such,” explained Hoskins.
“We get the kids excited and happy to eat healthier food items.”
The staff at The Little School is also very aware of food allergies and will remove problem ingredients from the menu as necessary.
“We just want to be with our kids. We love our kids,” said Hoskins. “We want to help them develop and grow. We have good kids and good families here.”
The Little School is at 163 W. Saddle Club Road and can be contacted at (417) 759-7477.
